Emona Folklore Group

09. Aug from 18:00, Castle Courtyard, Ljubljana Castle

The Emona Folklore Group was founded in 1967 by a group of folklore enthusiasts with Dr Bruno Ravnikar, an honorary member of the International Council of Organisations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF), at the helm. The group was named after Emona, the Roman settlement on the site of today’s Ljubljana. In addition to socialising and making new friends, the members of the group preserve the rich cultural heritage of Slovenia and are glad to share it with others, bringing joy with dancing, singing and folk music. Over the years, the group has attracted many folklore enthusiasts, while some members have been present since the very beginning. Today, they still follow the initial guiding principles, while at the same time constantly adding to their repertoire. The group has more than ninety members and consists of dancers as well as a folk and tamburica orchestra. Their dance choreography covers almost all regions of Slovenia, with dances from Styria, Carinthia, Goričko, Prekmurje and Razkrižje, shepherd dances from Bloke, and dances from Gorizia, the surroundings of Trieste, Rezija, White Carniola and Upper Carniola.

The Emona Folklore Group is a regular guest at various folklore festivals both in Slovenia and abroad. They have presented a fragment of Slovenian folk customs throughout Europe, as well as in the USA, Algeria and Egypt, and even in Japan, North Korea and Mexico. The group has received various honours and awards for its work, in recognition of its artistic merit, originality and superb execution.
