What can you expect?

From now on, you can discover the hidden corners of the Castle Hill with the interactive app The Wisdom of Castle Wine. Simply download the app to your mobile phone, set out on a walk in the company of virtual sommelier Urban and enjoy the natural environment above the city.

It is no secret that we appreciate good wine in Slovenia, but you probably were not aware that on the Castle Hill we have a vineyard, a descendant of the oldest vine in the world and the excellent Castle Wine Bar and Shop with selected wines from all over Slovenia. In a slightly different way, wine lovers can discover interesting facts about the castle grapevine and the history of the castle, as well as the culture of wine drinking. You can complete interactive tasks with enhanced reality and finally, after successfully solving all of the tasks, treat yourself to a glass.

The Course of the Interactive Walk

Your interactive companion on the walk will be Urban, the patron of winegrowers and wine, in whose company you will solve tasks about wine drinking culture, the production of different varieties and, of course, the history of the castle.

The trail will lead you through the castle’s tree-lined avenue, where there used to be a mighty wall, past the fortress known as Šance. The promenade and the lookout point were remodelled by the greatest Slovenian architect, Jože Plečnik, in the 1930s. The ruins have a very special guard, the dragon from the legend of Jason and the Argonauts, who hides under Šance. In the castle woods you will discover the Chapel of Mary the Holy Mother of God and unlock a mysterious chest with the help of wine symbols. The trail will then take you to the castle vineyard on the southern slopes, where vines of white Chardonnay and red Zweigelt grow. You will also become acquainted with the Castle Žametovka, a descendant of the oldest grapevine in the world, which is more than 450 years old.

During the walk you will discover beautiful views of the old part of Ljubljana, Prule, Krakovo and Trnovo. You will return to the Archers’ Tower, which is also the ceremonial seat of Ljubljana’s Wine Convent of St Urban, an association of lovers of wine culture. The Castle trail of wine secrets and wisdom would be incomplete without a glass of selected slovenian wine or juice.
