Illustrations in Motion

Illustrations from the picture books My Umbrella Can Turn into a Balloon, Piko the Dinosaur, Dragon Direndaj, The Fox’s Three Godfathers, Rabbit’s House, Invitation and others open the door to the imagination for people of all ages. In their contemporary presentation at this Ljubljana Castle exhibition – a video mapping accompanied by selected music – they come to life in a completely new way, conveying us on a unique journey through the rich tradition of illustration in Slovenia.

Book illustrations are more than just images in books. They are genuine works of art that speak to the universal: much like music, we perceive them beyond the boundaries of language. Slovenia has a rich tradition of illustration. The creative power of this tradition is still evident today, as contemporary Slovenian illustrators are making an important mark on the international art scene.

Imagine what happens when these joyful, poetic, expressive, humorous and mysterious images come to life, when they abandon their books and, through the intertwining of modern technologies, explode into a magnificent dance of light and colour! This is what is conjured up for you in an immersive experience in the castle’s largest hall, the Casemate. The selection of illustrations from different periods, ranging from the middle of the previous century to the present day, encompasses the creative world of artists such as Zvonko Čoh, Ančka Gošnik Godec, Marjanca Jemec Božič, Maja P. Kastelic, Marjan Manček, Lila Prap, Jelka Reichman, Alenka Sottler, Damijan Stepančič, Hana Stupica, Marlenka Stupica, Peter Škerl and Ana Zavadlav. 

Illustrations in Motion is an unforgettable experience that leads us through a fifteen-minute projection to the fairytale world within each of us!
