John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery (1923 –1968) was an American jazz guitarist who was known for his unusual technique of plucking the strings with the side of his thumb instead of a guitar pick, and for his extensive use of octaves, which gave him a distinctive sound. He developed this technique not for technical reasons but for the benefit of his neighbors and not waking his children. To support his family, worked as a welder during the day and practiced late at night. Wes Montgomery soon became a world wide star and is regarded as the best jazz guitarist of all times. He was also a musical innovator and introduced Latin-American rhythms, funk, rock and pop into jazz music. Montgomery died of a heart attack, while at home in Indianapolis. He was 45 years old.
