Renovation and Restoration of the Castle Courtyard
Renovation and Restoration of the Castle Courtyard
Due to renovation work on the access paths to the Castle Courtyard, the main entrance to the castle will be closed from Wednesday 22 October 2025 and visitors will be redirected through the upper funicular station. During the extensive work, access to the interior of the castle will unfortunately not be possible for people with mobility impairments.
The Ljubljana Castle is commencing the project “Renovation and Restoration of the Castle Courtyard”, with work expected to last until 15 November 2025. We thank visitors for their understanding during this time, and kindly request that they follow the signs leading through the upper funicular station to the courtyard and to all of the other castle content and spaces.
The structure that forms the foundation of the courtyard is almost forty years old. The waterproofing is worn out, allowing moisture to seep through. Within the framework of the project “Renovation and Restoration of the Castle Courtyard”, we will resurface the top layer of the access paths and terraces above the Lapidary in order to prevent further damage. In addition, we will install secondary drainage and repair the concrete elements. The planned work includes demolition, cleaning, installation of new layers with underfloor heating around the edges, and construction of the final layers of stone and granite paving stones.

During this time, the main entrance to the castle across the bridge will be closed and visitors will be redirected through the upper funicular station, and from there to the courtyard and the other castle spaces and content. The only exception is access to Strelec Restaurant, which will be possible from the upper funicular station to the Viewing Terrace, and from there to the restaurant.
Due to the rugged terrain, including stairs leading from the upper funicular station to the courtyard, people with mobility impairments will unfortunately not be able to access the interior of the castle or the castle content for the duration of the works. Thank you for your understanding.
We kindly request all visitors to follow the signs leading to the temporary entrance to the castle, as well as to the Info Centre and the Castle Shop, which will be accessed through the Castle Café. Thank you for your cooperation.
