10th Castle Days

The Castle Days traditionally commemorate an important day in the history of the Ljubljana Castle: on 16 May 1905, the then mayor of Ljubljana, Ivan Hribar, purchased the fortress from the state authorities for 60,200 crowns on behalf of the city, thus saving it from further decay.
The castle did not surrender when it was besieged by an enemy army, nor when it was abandoned and seriously damaged by the ravages of time. Natural disasters have failed to turn it into neglected ruins, and even now, when the whole country is threatened by an invisible enemy, it has not capitulated. On the contrary, despite all of the obstacles, the vision of the celebrated Mayor Hribar that with numerous and diverse cultural events, the castle should become an important cultural centre in the city, has been realised more consistently from year to year. On the occasion of the first round jubilee of the Castle Days – which should have been celebrated in 2020, but due to measures related to the Covid 19 pandemic, we were forced to postpone it to the first weekend in September this year – we have therefore prepared a diverse free programme suitable for the whole family.
On Saturday 4 September, the Day of Castle Jesters will take place in the Castle Courtyard, where different groups of court jesters will compete against each other and provide unforgettable entertainment. On Sunday 5 September, the medieval camp and the open day will leave a special mark on the Castle Days. On this day, visitors will have an opportunity to explore all of the corners of the castle. In addition to the halls where the carefully selected programme takes place, the spaces in which Ljubljana Castle and its unique venues are presented to the audience are also important. We have to acknowledge that the vision of Mayor Hribar is realised with every cultural event that comes to life behind the castle’s mighty walls.

We recommend using the funicular railway to visit the individual events of the 10th Castle Days. During the Castle Days, there will be a single reduced return fare for the funicular.
The execution of the Castle Days will be adapted to the current measures related to the Covid 19 pandemic.
In the case of rain, the Castle Days will be cancelled and a notice to that effect will be published on the website and FB page of the Ljubljana Castle.
