15th Castle Days

The appearance of the Ljubljana Castle today would be completely different if it had not been purchased from the state authorities on 16 May 1905 for 60,200 crowns by the then mayor Ivan Hribar, thus saving it from further decay. The visionary mayor had ambitious plans for the castle once it became the property of the City of Ljubljana. These plans were realised more than a century later, when the castle became an important cultural centre of the Slovenian capital. In honour of this anniversary, we organise the annual Castle Days, which are taking place for the fifteenth time this year.

As part of the Castle Days, we offer visitors a diverse experience of history. On Saturday, we will revive myths and legends about dragons, and on Sunday we will revitalise medieval customs, allowing visitors to experience a rich cultural heritage.

Dragon Day
On Saturday 16 May 2026, we invite you to an unforgettable day dedicated to dragons. In addition to the numerous street performances, juggling acts and fire shows in the Castle Courtyard, the programme will be enriched with various movement workshops, dragon storytelling and guided tours on the theme of dragons, as well as activities that promise fun and active experiences for all generations.

Medieval Camp and Open Day
On Sunday 17 May 2026, at the Open Day, visitors will have an opportunity to explore every corner of the castle and view the permanent and temporary exhibitions free of charge. On this day, the Ljubljana Castle and its surroundings will be transformed into a genuine medieval scene. In addition to a diverse range of knightly duels, performances and a Medieval Camp in the Castle Park, the day will undoubtedly be marked by a Live Chess performance and a display by falconers in the Castle Courtyard. Everyone who is curious, hungry and eager for the life of knights and nobles is warmly invited!

Visit us and experience the vibrant pulse of events above the city!

We recommend taking the funicular to visit individual events within the 15th Castle Days. During the Castle Days, a single reduced return ticket price will apply for the funicular.

In case of rain, the Castle Days will be postponed to the first weekend in September: Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September 2026. An announcement about this will be published online and on the Ljubljana Castle social media (Facebook, Instagram).
