Looking in the Mouth
Within the context of the Luther Year, the Goethe Institute Ljubljana, in cooperation with the Ljubljana Castle, is organising an innovative-interactive exhibition showing the linguistic creativity of Protestant reformer and maverick Martin Luther.
In his translation of the Bible, Martin Luther “listened to the mouth of the ordinary people” and thus made a decisive contribution to the creation and emancipation of the German language. Five hundred years later, many of his words and phrases are still present in the everyday use of German.
Eight of Luther’s phrases provide a starting point for eight installations. The experiments, which are translated into space, demonstrate various aspects of linguistic expression, the speech act, the multiple meanings of words and their etymology. The catalogue accompanying the exhibition includes a comparative study of Luther’s achievements and the efforts of Slovenian reformers.
