Sculptural Spatial Installation

Nataša Sedej: Starry Window

from 16. Jan to 04. May 2025, from 9:00 to 18:00, Pentagonal Tower, Ljubljana Castle

The work is conceived as a poetic sculptural spatial installation in situ. Rather than being a neutral environment in which the individual elements are placed, the Pentagonal Tower becomes an integral part of the artwork; the installation merges with the environment.
Light and shade transform the fragile and subtle surface of ceramic objects. An illusion of floating gives rise to a feeling of lightness, as countless white particles on the surface reflect the light. We perceive simple, lyrical connections with things that define us deeply.
The installation goes beyond the limits of a classical understanding of material and reveals technological mastery in combining diverse materials: white clay enters into a dialogue with iron wire, wire mesh and glass. The artist explores how a sculptural space can be defined with a three-dimensional drawing woven from lines and points.
Through the starry window we gaze into infinity, into the miracle and the original mystery. The transcendent landscapes of our being open up, nourishing and calling us. The timeless memory of our common starry home shines through. We look into the sky and we look into ourselves, at the reflections of the stars within us, whispering about chaos, coincidence, order and the organising principles of the universe.
Upon awarding the Grand Prize for her work ‘Vision Space’, the jury member Marko Košan remarked that Nataša Sedej’s creative work “highlights with its filigree detail the real and apparent material fragility of ceramics with an immanent and characteristic picturesque note, enabling the artist to subtly and unobtrusively, yet extremely convincingly, conquer the inner and outer sculptural space of the artwork, especially in a playful dialogue of complementary and interpenetrating light and shade”.

The exhibition was organised in collaboration with the Ljubljana Fine Artists Society:
