Martin Bricelj Baraga: Moonolith - A Monument to the Moon and the Stars

from 22. Mar to 05. May 2017, from 9:00 to 21:00, Castle Courtyard, Ljubljana Castle

MOONOLITH is an interactive monument for a public space. It reflects the moon and the constellations of stars on its surface. Dedicated to urban strollers, it is a tribute to dark matter, emptiness, void, in-between space, speed, and time and its passage. The installation is location-specific, as with every placement it develops a new relationship with the guest space and the visitors.

MOONOLITH is a large round celestial sphere that operates on two levels. Through interaction, its surface becomes a responsive instrument of light and sound, which opens up the field of play. In its rest phase, MOONOLITH is a sculpture that, with the movement of light and sound, represents a space of calmness and reflection for the visitor.

The basic model of MOONOLITH is a ball that, with its modular design and audio-visual dynamics on the surface, and with its placement in public urban areas, is associated both with the night sky (the celestial sphere) and with the residents of and visitors to the city. The visual (shape, colour, the surface of the body) and lighting characteristics of the object MOONOLITH reflect the starry night sky, the moon and the stars. Through this primary layer of the installation, the object in its different versions then spreads out an interactive layer that responds in various ways to the auditory and visual stimuli of the visitors.

Martin Bricelj Baraga is a media artist and independent curator. His interactive works, audio-visual performances and collaborative work explore the relationship between man and machine, the social aspects of popular culture, contemporary monumentalism and the political dimensions of media reality. He has exhibited in numerous galleries and art spaces around the world. In 2013, the installation DarkStar was the winning installation of an open call issued by the festival Glow Next, which was visited by 400,000 people.
