Castle Pipers
In the medieval ages there was a guard tower at the top of the Castle hill to observe for enemies approaching the town and fire that may start in the narrow streets below. When a wind band consisting of three musicians was founded (also called “waits” in English) they were playing on the horn, trombone and the cornet in the wooden corridor of the tower to herald the start of municipal functions and signal the major times of day.
Musicians were municipal employees and as their salary was so low (they were entitled to some money, fire wood and a green uniform) they were available to citizens for weddings, baptisms, celebrations and also as troubadours.
The whistlers' tower was torn down at the end of 18th century but the musicians ceased playing even before that.
You can listen to the Castle Pipers every Saturday from the 31st of July to the 25th of September 2021 at 11.30 am.
