Performing Civil Wedding Ceremonies – Official Venue of the Ljubljana Administrative Unit
The Ljubljana Castle is the official venue of the Ljubljana Administrative Unit for performing wedding ceremonies, which take place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The official venues are the White Hall and the Blue Hall, each of which can accommodate up to 30 people.
If a wedding ceremony is held on these days and in these halls, the registration, preparation and execution of the wedding is carried out through the Ljubljana Administrative Unit and the wedding ceremony is performed at the Ljubljana Castle.
In order to make it easier for you to organise a wedding ceremony through the Ljubljana Administrative Unit, here is some useful information about the procedure itself:
Step 1: If you want to get married inside the official venues (White Hall and Blue Hall) at the Ljubljana Castle and on one of the specified days (Thursday, Friday or Saturday), please contact the Ljubljana Administrative Unit by telephone at 01 306 32 41 or via the form found on the website. This way you will get an appointment to register for your marriage.
Step 2: On the day specified in the appointment, the wedding couple should report to the Ljubljana Administrative Unit at the counter of the Civil Registry Office of the Department of Counters and Local Offices (Tobačna ulica 5, Ljubljana), on the ground floor, where you will receive more detailed information about the marriage procedure and the available dates. The official hours of the Ljubljana Administrative Unit for such information and registration are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, on Wednesdays from 8.00 am to 7.00 pm, and on Fridays from 8.00 am to 2.00 pm.
Step 3: On the chosen date, as confirmed by the Ljubljana Administrative Unit, the future spouses, together with any witnesses and guests, proceed to the wedding ceremony at the Ljubljana Castle at the agreed time.
Access to the Ljubljana Castle
In order to make it easier for you to organise your wedding ceremony, please consider the following options for accessing the Ljubljana Castle.
- At the Ljubljana Castle, 40 paid parking places are available, one of which is reserved for vehicles of people with reduced mobility or disabled people. When a wedding ceremony is performed at the Ljubljana Castle, the wedding couple is eligible to receive the first hour of parking free of charge for one personal vehicle. Applications for one hour of free parking must be submitted to the email addressparkirisce@ljubljanskigrad.si no later than five working days before the date of the wedding ceremony. Only in this way can we ensure that you have one free parking space.
- The Ljubljana Castle can be accessed by funicular railway. We recommend purchasing tickets in advance via the website. In case there is queue at the funicular station, we recommend that you come to the castle early so that you can arrive on time for the ceremony.
The numerous events taking place simultaneously at the Ljubljana Castle can affect the occupancy of the funicular railway. It is therefore also worth considering the option of coming to the castle by taxi.
Gathering Point
Regardless of your selected means of transport, we recommend that you arrive at the Ljubljana Castle at least 15 minutes before the start of the wedding ceremony. Please wait with your guests in the Castle Park (by the parking area). A security guard will escort you to the wedding hall in good time. The wedding hall can accommodate a maximum of 30 people, including children. Pets are not allowed. For the elderly and people with mobility impairments, access to the halls is possible by elevator.
In the area in front of the hall, you will be met by the registrar, who is obliged to officially verify the identity of the wedding couple and any witnesses. The wedding couple and witnesses must have personal documents with them. The registrar will then inform you about the wedding protocol and the course of the wedding ceremony.
Together with the witnesses, you will enter the hall to the sounds of the wedding march. The ceremony will be led by the registrar and an authorised person from the Ljubljana Administrative Unit, who will perform the official part of the marriage ceremony after the ceremonial address. The wedding ceremony lasts up to 20 minutes.
The hall is intended solely for the performance of the civil wedding ceremony. All other activities (photography, recessional) are performed outside the halls, outdoors or at a selected catering provider. After the official part of the wedding ceremony is completed, you will therefore make your way to the exit and leave by the same route that you arrived at the wedding hall.
The Ljubljana Castle is a monument of cultural significance, so it is not permitted to bring and serve food and drinks in the area of the Ljubljana Castle and the Castle Park. Throwing rice and confetti is not allowed, but soap bubbles are can be used. You are welcome to use the castle surroundings for photography, but we politely request that you also consider other wedding couples and visitors to the castle.
Thank you for following these recommendations.
